Oesophagus
The oesophagus delivers the bolus of food to the stomach via a long muscular tube. Normally, the lumen of the oesophagus is collapsed, and the wall of the oesophagus is composed of four layers: the mucosa, submucosa, muscalaris externa and adventitia.
a. Mucosa The mucosa has three regions.
b. Submucosa The submucosa consists of dense irregular connective tissue containing the following.
c. Muscularis Externa The muscularis externa is composed of the following.
d. Adventitia Superior to the diaphragm the oesophagus is covered by the adventitia, which is composed of fibrous connective tissue. However, the oesophagus is covered by a serosa inferior to the diaphragm. |
